The two top-seeded women’s tennis players in the world will face each other in what could be called a blockbuster final of this year’s Australian Open.
It was countryman against countryman during the January 29th semis as world number 1, Serena Williams beat spry youngster, Madison Keys at their semi-final with straight sets after number 2, Maria Sharapova did the same during her earlier encounter with Ekaterina Makarova.

The reason this is a match to look out for is that Williams and Sharapova have a long history, with Williams having boasting a 16-2 record against the Russian. This means Sharapova hasn’t beat Williams in over 10 years, the last time being in 2004. The psychological edge is definitely in Williams’ favour. Not to completely count out Sharapova though. In her semi she breezed past her opponent 6-3, 6-2, while Keys forced Williams to work harder for her victory of 7-6, 6-2. Keys matched Williams for power but not always control as the 18-time Grand Slam champion edged a tight match over one hour and 24 minutes.
Over on the men’s side of things, Andy Murray has made it into the finals after beating Czech, Tomas Berdych. The Scot will face Novak Djokovic after he defeated last year’s champion Stan Wawrinka in their semi-final match played on Friday, January 30. The tournament runs until February 1.
