Lewis Hamilton Wins His 6th Formula One World Championship as He Edges Closer to Schumacher’s Title Record.
Hamilton finishing second in United States Grand Prix was enough to win him his sixth world title. Valtteri Bottas won his fourth race of the season in Austin but that wasn’t enough to deny the Briton from claiming the drivers’ title as Red bull’s Max Verstappen also came third. Hamilton now on six means he’s only one title away from matching Michael Schumacher’s seven title wins.
Bottas won U.S. Grand Prix in Austin:
Drivers | Time |
Bottas | 1:33:55.653 |
Hamilton | +4.148 |
Verstappen | +5.002 |
Lewis Hamilton has now left Argentine Legend Juan Manuel Fangio on the all-time leaderboard. Fangio got his five championship titles in the 1950s. Hamilton with this one means he has now won three titles in a row (2017, 2018, 2019) and the fifth title in six years. Former Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg prevented him from making it 6/6 after winning the championship with just five points over Hamilton in 2016.
With just two Grand Prix races left Hamilton was confirmed the winner of this season’s championship. The British motorsport driver in 2019 has ten wins and made the podium 16 times.
Lewis Hamilton on their team radio expressed his happiness on his achievement, he said: “Still we rise, still, we rise. What an incredible weekend. Thank you so much, guys, for today, and to everyone who came out. I can’t believe it. I really can’t believe it.”
Hamilton took his time to pay tribute to Niki Lauda: “It’s been the hardest year for us as a team. We lost Niki this year, a really crucial and pivotal member of our team.” Niki Lauda was a three-time world champion and a former advisor to Mercedes. He died in May at age 70.
Hamilton ready to surpass Schumacher as F1 Greatest Driver
Michael Schumacher got the highest championship titles in formula one history. The German won his final race in 2004 and ended his driving career on seven championship titles – Hamilton is just one behind him. Sebastian Vettel is another active driver among drivers with the highest title wins in history but with four titles.
Drivers | F1 Drivers Championship Wins |
Michael Schumacher | 7 |
Lewis Hamilton | 6 |
Juan Manuel Fangio | 5 |
Alain Prost | 4 |
Sebastian Vettel | 4 |
Jack Brabham | 3 |
Jackie Stewart | 3 |
Niki Lauda | 3 |
Nelson Piquet | 3 |
Ayrton Senna | 3 |
Hamilton is just 9 wins and 6 podiums from surpassing Schumacher’s 91 career wins and 155 podiums. The Briton on 87 has been on more pole positons than the German on 68.
Hamilton said there is still a lot to come from him: “I’m working on a masterpiece and I haven’t quite finished it yet, so I’m trying to understand. It takes a long time to master a craft and, whilst I feel like I am mastering it, there’s still more to master, still more to add to it, more pieces to the puzzle to add, more ups and downs along the way. But I feel like I’ve got the best tools now, up to this point at least.”
