Deontay Wilder beats Luis Ortiz in WBC Heavyweight Championship Rematch
On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Wilder knocked down Ortiz in the seventh round with an atrocious right-hand punch to lift the WBC heavyweight title. This win means Wilder is now undefeated in 43 matches with 10 title defences. As far as this year is concerned, the American heavyweight boxer (Wilder) is done the fighting. His next match is against Tyson Fury come next year February.
Wilder in one of his quotes after seeing off Ortiz – “They have to be perfect for 12 rounds, I only have to be perfect for 2secs.” There are no lies in this as this was exactly what happened. Ortiz was all over Wilder in all the rounds before the last one of the day. Wilder’s first few punches didn’t come until the fourth round but all virtually missed the target.
From the look of expression on Wilder’s face in the fifth round, he appeared worried and uncomfortable with how the match was going for him. His Opponent, Ruiz Jr, on the other hand, was throwing punches at him with both hands as the round ended.
The first significant punch from Wilder came in the seventh round. Ortiz fell down as the punch landed on his face, yielded as he couldn’t beat the referee’s 10 counts.
Ortiz two defeats in 35 matches have come from Wilder. He was close to winning Wilder’s WBC title in 2018 but surrendered in the 10th round.
Attention now turns to the fight between Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz Jr, coming up 7th December 2019: This is also a rematch. Ruiz Jr defeated Joshua earlier this year in New York. The Briton heavyweight boxer (Joshua) will be out for redemption against the California born heavyweight boxer (Ruiz Jr) in Saudi Arabia next month to reclaim his heavyweight title belts (IBF, WBO and WBA).
