Serena Williams wins ASB Classic Final in Auckland, her first title win since giving birth in 2017.
Serena Williams, having lost all her finals since 2017 (without winning a single set in all the finals) won ASB Classic final today, defeating Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-4. This is Serena first title since Australian Open 2017 and her 73rd career WTA titles.
Tennis legend, Serena Williams, victory today means she has now won at least a title in four decades of playing the beautiful game of tennis:
Decades | Number of titles |
The 1990s | 5 |
The 2000s | 30 |
The 2010s | 37 |
The 2020s | 1 |
Serena Williams reflecting on her first title in three years: “It’s pretty satisfying just to get a win in the final. That was really important for me and I want to build on it. It’s just a step towards the next goal.”
It is obvious Serena is already thinking about Australian Open 2020 (which starts in eight days’ time). The 23-time grand slam champion next goal is winning a major title. Equalling and breaking Margaret Court’s 24 slam titles in Women’s Tennis history is all that Serena Williams got her eyes on now.
Serena Williams’ ASB Classic 2020 Performance
Serena Williams defeated Camila Giorgi (6-3, 6-2), Christina Mchale (3-6, 6-2, 6-3), Laura Siegemund (6-4, 6-3) and Amanda Anisimova (6-1, 6-1) in the round of 32, the round of 16, quarterfinal and semifinal to make a final with Jessica Pegula.
Jessica Pegula got off to a fast start in the final match against Serena, leading 2-0 in the early part of the first set. At this point, it was looking like Serena might lose another final again. But the American tennis star (Serena) bounced back, saved four break points to avoid a 0-3 deficit and levelled the score at 3-3. Her game rose afterwards, preventing Pegula from winning any more tennis game as she closed the set 6-3.
Serena Williams was dominant in the second set. She was everywhere on the court and striking winners without difficulty. Jessica Pegula was left without any chance to turn the set around as Serena Williams won the second set 6-4, ending the match at an hour and 36 minutes to win her first title in three years.
After Serena much needed win over Pegula, she headed straight for doubles final. Asia Muhammed and Taylor Townsend defeated her (Serena Williams) and Carolina Wozniacki 6-4 6-4 to become the new ASB Classic doubles champions.
