Coco defeats Venus Williams Once Again to Advance to the Second Round of the Australian Open
About 5 months ago, at Wimbledon, Gauf Coco defeated Venus Williams in her first-ever grand slam match – this win obviously brought her to the limelight.
Today, she has just defeated Venus once again, 7-6(5) 6-3, but this time around at Australian Open 2020 to reach the second round of the grand slam tournament. This is another slam debut win for her and the first time she is playing in Melbourne.
In an interview after the match, Coco appreciated the fans that were singing her name during the course of the match: “I just want to say thank you guys so much. You guys were chanting my name.”
Gauf Coco will face Sorana Cirstea in the second round of Australian Open 2020 and the winner between her and Sorana plays either Osaka or Zheng in the third round.
Coco is now 2/2 Wins Over Venus Williams
The rising star (Coco) seems to have dominated the first set, breaking in the first game and establishing three set points at 5-3 and 5-4. Although the set was later tied, Venus hitting an overhead into the net won it for Coco as she closed the first set 7-6(5).
Coco started the second set well, had an initial 3-0 lead. We might have thought the former world number one (Venus) would fight back as she did in the first set but this never happened as she couldn’t match Coco’s all-court game and speed as the match proceeded. Gauf Coco’s lone break decided the set as it ended 6-3.
It took just an hour and 40 minutes for the youngest player at the tournament (Coco) to beat the oldest (Venus Williams) to make two wins in two matches over the tennis’s legend.
Serena Williams, on the other hand, began her Australian Open 2020 campaign in fine form, with an emphatic 6-0 6-3 win over Potapova in the pursuit for her 24th grand slam title. This is her 350th grand slam match win and she did it in just 58 minutes to reach the second round of the tournament.
