Within the time-space of 1hour 14minutes, Coco Gauf defeated Wang Qiang 6-1 6-3 in the final of the Emilia-Romagna Open in Parma to win her second WTA title. Coco victory against Wang means that the 17years old American will move from No. 30 to No. 25 in the latest world rankings to be announced on Monday and also be seeded for the upcoming French Open happening later this month.
Coco raced out to a 3-0 lead and saved three break points at 5-1 before sealing the first set in the tie. She crushed Wang’s hope of a comeback after winning four of the last five games to see out the contest also emphatically in the second set.
Coco Gauff has now become the fifth teenager to win a singles title on the WTA tour this campaign. Not quite long after cruising past Chinese Wang Qiang in the singles final, she immediately partnered with fellow American Caty McNally to claim the double crown too. Both have been sensational playing together – this is their third tour-level doubles title together since their partnership began.
Coco Gauf becomes the youngest WTA player to win both the singles and doubles titles at the same event since Maria Sharapova in 2004.
The 17years old became unplayable in this tournament – losing just one set throughout the tournament. And overall, Coco has now defeated 20 opponents in her last 26 matches on tour.
Coco, on her experience playing on clay, said: “It definitely means a lot, especially on clay, which is not really a surface I feel like people associate with me. I always liked [clay], but I always fall on it, I always get dirty! I have good results on it, so it’s not about my performance. It’s just that clay shows you a little extra love than the other surfaces do.”
