Nnamdi Kanu is a Nigerian pro-Biafra political activist, the founder of IPOB (Indigenous People Of Biafra), leading the largest separatist movement since the Nigerian civil war. Nnamdi Kanu in the last 5 years has mobilized the largest following of Igbo ‘Biafran’ youths in the quest for independence for the Eastern Nigerian region – The Biafra.
He has come the closest to breaking up Nigeria before the government’s crackdown on its members.
Currently detained by the Nigerian government, Nnamdi Kanu has in the past been arrested, detained and tried for the movement. He escaped death when the Nigerian military descended at his family home, allegedly shooting and killing scores in 2018/19. Having returned to the UK where he resides and been granted citizenship, Kanu continued mobilizing through his media broadcasts until his abduction and detention by Nigerian government earlier this year.
The movement was proscribed a terrorist organisation even before he floated the security arm called ESN – Eastern Security Network. Nnamdi Kanu’s controversial separatist activism has brought nightmares to the Nigerian government because of his incorruptible stance as well as dividing opinions on his approach and style. Like him or not, agree with him or not, Nnamdi Kanu is a force to reckon with and dead or alive, Nigeria’s history cannot be told without him in the picture.
